Characteristics/Mentality

The Basenji is an independent, intelligent and alert breed. It is devoted to family and friends, but can be reserved towards strangers. The breed should be treated with respect, and it prefers to make contact itself. Early boundary setting is important, as the basenji is independent. Socialization with both humans and other dogs is important, and sufficient exercise is necessary.

Size and appearance

The Basenji is a lightly built dog with an aristocratic appearance. Male dogs should be around 43 cm tall, and bitches around 40 cm. The coat is short and fine, and the colors can be black/white, red/white, brindle/white, black/tan/white with or without tan patches over the eyes and markings on the muzzle and cheeks. The tip of the tail, paws and chest must be white.

Fur work

The Basenji’s short coat requires little grooming.

History

The Basenji is considered one of the world’s oldest dog breeds. Depictions of similar dogs have been found from the Pyramid Age in Egypt. The breed has followed peoples down the Nile and spread to East and West Africa. It was originally used for hunting and still has this function in today’s Africa.
