About the Bolonka
Briefly about the breed
- Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is a loving, happy and lively companion dog.
- The breed is small, with an ideal weight of 3-4 kilos.
- The appearance is friendly and a little mischievous, with lots of fur, mustaches and beards.
- Tsvetnaya means multicolored, and there are 15 official color designations for the breed.
- The Bolonka was bred in the 1950s and has elements of bichon frisé, lhasa apso and shih tzu in its origins.
History
The Bolonka was bred in the 1950s with elements of other breeds such as Bichon Frize, Lhasa Apso and Shih Tzu. It was officially recognized in 1966, and the Russian national club was formed in 1999.
Characteristics and mentality
The Bolonka is a loving companion dog with a lively disposition and steady temperament. It is easily learned and can participate in various activities such as tracking, obedience and agility. The breed adapts to the family’s activity level and is believed to live for 14-15 years.
Size and appearance
The Bolonka has a withers height of up to 26 cm for both male dogs and bitches, and an ideal weight of 3-4 kg. The body is slightly longer than it is tall and has a harmonious build. It has a sweet and friendly expression, with bright colors in its large fur. The breed should not resemble a shih tzu or a poodle.
Fur grooming
The Bolonka has a beautiful coat, but it requires regular grooming. Especially in the transition between puppy and adult fur, care must be taken to avoid tangles and knots. The breed does not normally shed and is considered allergy-friendly, but allergy sufferers are advised to try spending time with a bolonka before getting a puppy. Puppies can release more allergens than adult dogs.
Health
The Bolonka was registered in Norway from 2013, so experience with the breed is limited. Eyes and knees are common problem areas for many miniature dog breeds, and bolonka breeders are aware of this. The parent animals must have known eye clearance and knee joint status before puppies can be registered.
