About the Groenendael

Summary

  • Belgian Shepherd, also known as the Belgian, includes the Tervuer, Malinois, Laekenois and Groenendael varieties.
  • The breed is hardworking, alert, easily trained and needs a lot of activation both physically and mentally.
  • The Belgian matures late, around three years of age.
  • The breed is considered healthy and long-lived, with an average lifespan of 11-14 years.

History

The Belgian Shepherd, including the Groenendael, Malinois, Laekenois and Tervuren varieties, was established as a breed in 1891. From being herding dogs, they have developed into versatile working and family dogs. Professor A. Reul in Belgium became interested in creating a Belgian Sheepdog breed at the end of the 19th century. The breed club set the standard for the different coat types and colors in 1899 and 1907.

Characteristics and mentality

The Belgian is lively, happy, alert and attentive. It is intelligent, easy to learn and very willing to work. Activation and exercise are important to channel their energy. Environmental training and socialization during the first year of life is necessary. Towards the owner, they are soft and loving, but can be disinterested in strangers.

Size and appearance

Belgian Shepherd should be medium-sized, well-proportioned, square and combine elegance and strength. Muscular, hardy and adapted to an outdoor lifestyle. The four variants have the same standard with different fur qualities and colours. The Groenendael has long, black fur. The Malinois has short, reddish-yellow fur with black hair tips and a mask. The Laekenois has rough hair and dry fur, reddish yellow with a hint of black hair tips. The Tervuer is long-haired, reddish-yellow or gray with black hair tips and a mask.

Fur work

Belgian Shepherd does not require much fur work as the fur has self-grooming properties. Bathe when necessary and brush a couple of times a month, more frequently during shedding periods.
