About the Japanese Spitz

Briefly about the Japanese Spitz

  • The Japanese Spitz is an adaptable breed that thrives both in city apartments and in the countryside as a farm dog.
  • Although the breed does not require a lot of physical exercise, it greatly appreciates walks in nature and would like to be part of it.
  • The Japanese Spitz is a family-friendly breed that is alert, willing to work and happy.
  • It thrives especially well with children, provided they treat it nicely.
  • The breed is alert and likes to bark when it discovers something exciting. It tends to be influenced by the calm and harmony of its surroundings.
History and distributionThe Japanese Spitz is the result of targeted breeding work carried out by Japanese breeders in the 1920s. The breed was developed by crossing Pomeranian and Samoyed. The Japanese have proven to be skilled in breeding, and the breed quickly acquired a noble and uniform character. The Japanese Spitzhund was approved by the FCI in 1964.Although interest in the breed waned for a period due to its spread, skilled breeders have again produced a good strain of dogs in recent years. Today, Norway and Sweden are among the countries where the breed has the largest distribution outside of Japan. The first Japanese Spitz was registered in Norway in 1973, and in 1979 the Norwegian Japanese Spitz Club was established.

Fur care and health

The Japanese Spitz has a dirt-repellent coat that is easier to care for than many people think. With a thorough combing and brushing once a week, the dog can stay clean and white for months without bathing. When showing, more frequent bathing and brushing is recommended to maintain a well-groomed coat.
