Characteristics

Papillon and Phalene are two variants of the same beautiful breed, which can be born in the same litter, but are still considered two different breeds. These dogs are known for their distinctive appearance and wonderful personality. They are primarily companion dogs, but thanks to their easy learning and energy, they also thrive in obedience training and agility. Whether you want a companion for snuggling on the sofa or a partner for exciting activities, Papillon and Phalene will be with you every step of the way.Charming and lively, Papillon and Phalene are alert dogs that never go unnoticed. Their elegant appearance and adorable nature make them a joy to have around. These dogs are easy to care for and will enjoy the attention of their family. They like to be involved in what is happening and will be faithful companions throughout your life.

Look

The Papillon, with its characteristic erect ears, has a majestic posture. The ears are set high and are carried out to the side and obliquely upwards. They form an angle of approx. 45° to the horizontal plane. The ears are an important part of the breed’s charm, and it is important that they do not point straight up or resemble Pomeranian ears. The inside of the ear is covered with silky, wavy fur, while the outside is surrounded by long, hanging fringes that extend well beyond the edge of the ear.Phalene, on the other hand, have elegant, pendulous ears that are highly mobile. These ears are covered with wavy fur that can be very long and contribute to the dog’s attractive appearance. Crosses between Papillon and Phalene can result in half erect ears with drooping ear tips, which is considered a serious fault.

Fur care and health

The Papillon and Phalene have a moderately long coat that is abundant, shiny and wavy. The fur is not curly, but rather resilient with a silky texture. It lies flat against the body and has a nice texture. Fur care is important to maintain the breed’s beautiful appearance.Papillon and Phalene are a healthy breed with no known serious health problems. The club’s recommendations to breed only from healthy parent animals has significantly reduced the cases of patella luxation. The eye disease PRA, which can lead to blindness, has also been tackled using a newly developed DNA test. Sick animals are detected before they are used in breeding, and cases of PRA are now absent in healthy breeding animals. With proper care and regular veterinary follow-up, you can expect your Papillon or Phalene to live for 15 years or more.

History

dates back to the 16th century and was popular with the nobility in France and Belgium. It has retained its charm and popularity over the years, and today Papillon and Phalene are known and loved all over the world.
