The history of the Saarloos Wolfdog:

The origins of this fascinating breed can be traced back to the Netherlands in the 1930s. Leendert Saarloos, a nature and dog lover, was keen to restore the natural qualities in German Shepherds that had become too domesticated. He crossed a male German Shepherd dog of the classic Prussian type with a wolf female of the Siberian-European type.Through selective breeding and careful selection, he achieved a new breed known as the European Wolfhound. Eventually it became clear that this breed was not suitable as a service or guide dog, but it retained the heritage of the Saarloos – a dog that was closer to nature. The breed was recognized in 1975 and given the name Saarloos Wolfhond to honor its creator.
