History and characteristics

The Shiba is the smallest of the national Japanese breeds and has ancestors who immigrated to Japan from Southeast Asia in prehistoric times. The breed has existed unchanged for several thousand years. The Shiba was used as a hunting and guard dog, especially for hunting small game and pheasants. It is lively, agile, persistent and courageous. The Shiba needs activation to trigger physical energy and challenge its mental capacity. It is loyal to its family, alerts when strangers arrive, but generally barks little. Socialization is important to get it used to people, other dogs and animals, as well as handling. The Shiba is intelligent, easy to learn and has an independent way of thinking. Consistent and determined treatment is necessary, but it must never be cowed.

Size and appearance

The Shiba has a withers height of 40 cm for male dogs and 37 cm for bitches, with /- 1.5 cm deviation. The eyes are small, triangular, dark brown and slanted. The ears are also small, triangular, slightly bent forward and tightly erect. The tail is set high, powerful and carried in a curled or sickle-shaped arch over the back. The fur is double, with soft and thick underwool and hard and straight cover hairs that stick out slightly from the body. Shiba comes in three approved colors: red (deep orange), black and tan, and sesame (wild color).

Fur grooming

The Shiba has a dense coat that is well suited to different climates, including ours. It sheds twice a year, but otherwise requires minimal grooming. The coat is self-cleaning, and apart from brushing during shedding, there is usually no need to bathe the dog.
