  • Glatthårsfox is an aesthetically pleasing hound bred for fox hunting.
  • The breed is brave, lively and always on the alert, ready for exciting experiences.
  • It is quick, willing to work and is well suited to hunting, agility, track and rally obedience.

  • The breed has a rich history linked to fox hunting and has developed into a popular companion dog and versatile working dog.

History:

In the 18th century, fox hunting on horseback became a popular sport among the nobility in England. The need arose for a small, fast and brave dog that could follow the horses and enter the fox forest. It became important that the dog had a dominant white color to distinguish it from the fox and the fox-hound.Smooth-haired fox and rough-haired fox terrier were originally seen as the same breed. It was not until 1876, when “The Fox Terrier Club of England” was established, that the breed standard was written and the two coat varieties were recognized as separate breeds. The current breed standard is largely the same as that adopted in 1879.

Characteristics/Mentality:

The smooth-haired fox is today both a popular company dog and a great hunting dog. It also has good qualities as a tracking dog and thrives in dog sports such as obedience, rally obedience and agility. The breed is mobile, lively, alert and always ready for action. It is willing to work, fearless and has fast movements. Although it is a typical underground hunting dog, it also loves water and can enjoy swimming in the summer. The smooth-haired fox thrives best when it can be with its family all the time.

Size/Appearance:

The smooth-haired fox is an active and lively dog with a bone stock and strength in a small format. It has a well-built body, short back and a marked standing posture. The weight varies between male dogs (7.5-8 kg) and bitches (7-7.5 kg). The breed is neither bulky nor coarse, and neither tall nor short-legged.

Health:

The smooth-haired fox is generally a healthy breed with few health problems.

Fur care:

The coat of smooth-haired foxes is easy to care for, but exhibition preparation may require some clipping and grooming. Moulting occurs approximately twice a year, and it is beneficial to remove dead fur during this period.
