Characteristics/Mentality

The Welsh terrier is an intelligent and alert dog that radiates self-confidence and power. Despite its size, it has an impressive capacity. It loves people, especially its family, and is always eager to learn new things. It thrives on car and boat trips, and is not afraid of thunderstorms or gunshots.The breed’s hunting instinct is almost gone today, and in Norway the Welsh terrier is primarily used as a companion dog. It can also participate in activities such as agility and obedience. It is important to guide the Welsh Terrier with a firm but loving hand, as it is intelligent, alert and easily trained with a capacity far beyond its size. It is an excellent family dog and has great self-confidence and endurance.

Size/Appearance

The Welsh terrier should not exceed a height of 39 cm. The fur is rough, hard, very dense and abundant. Fur without undercoat is undesirable. Preferred colors are black and tan, or black/grey mottled (grizzle) and tan without black lines along the toes. Black color below the hocks is very undesirable.

Fur grooming

The fur of the Welsh terrier must be trimmed approx. four times a year and brushed weekly. Regular trimming can prevent shedding and keep the coat in good condition.

History

The Welsh terrier originated in the British Isles and was originally used for hunting. The breed was first introduced at dog shows from Wales and southern England under the names “Welsh” and “Old English Brokenhaired Terrier”.However, it was the Welsh who took care of the breed and formed a breed club in 1885. The following year, the Welsh terrier was recognized as a separate breed by the English Kennel Club.
