HistoryThe West Highland terrier originated in Great Britain and was originally used to hunt foxes and badgers in the Scottish Highlands. The white color of the dogs proved to be an advantage during the hunt, and they were eventually bred specifically for these characteristics.

Characteristics and mentality

The Westien is a learnable, alert, happy, brave and self-confident dog. It has great trust in its owners and thrives both on the sofa and out in nature. The breed likes challenges such as agility, tracks and rally obedience, and with the right training and care it becomes a faithful companion for many years.

Size and appearance

The West Highland terrier weighs around 8 kilos and measures approx. 28 cm above the withers. It has a powerful body, straight back and muscular limbs. The head is characteristic with small, erect ears and an alert expression with dark eyes and a black nose. The tail is carried straight up and the coat is pure white with wispy hair and a short, soft undercoat.

Health

The Westien is generally a healthy breed with good health and a long lifespan. Skin problems can occur, but to a lesser extent than other diseases and defects.

Fur grooming

The coat of the West Highland terrier requires a lot of care and should be trimmed approximately every 8 months. week by someone who is experienced with the breed. The coat consists of a layer of dense undercoat and a coarser cover coat. Regular grooming is necessary to maintain a healthy and insulating coat.
